BMR, you have seen it too? i thought it was just when people came to your board and my board and didn't have the active X control thingie to be able to listen to the music... if you right click on it i think, it should give you something to download, and when you download it, it stops... i think. *L*

This is just certain words that a window pops up for you to search on....it is driving me absolutely berserk. I tried clicking on it and it took me back to hostboards main page. *mutters* Never can be an easy solution to a pesky problem. [img]graemlins/whatever.gif[/img]

*nods*... i have mine set to never ever download them without first prompting me to check and be sure that it is digitally signed by Microsoft officially....

i used to get them alllll the time on HB when i was using IE... i'm using it right now, but that's because i haven't had a chance to download firefox yet, *L*.... i NEVER ever had that problem on firefox, and i'm not getting it now with IE... but that's probably because the drive is newly wiped clean... no spyware as of yet... I know one thing for sure , this happens with the latest music that you put on here. All the others times you had music here Active X control did not pop up.

ActiveX control is a Microsoft term that is used to denote reusable software components that are based on Microsoft Component Object Model (COM). ActiveX controls provide encapsulated reusable functionality to programs and they are typically but not always visual in nature.

For example, an ActiveX control might implement spreadsheet functionality similar to Microsoft Excel, which would be visual in nature, but it also might implement functionality to upload or download files from an FTP site, which is not visual in nature unless it incorporates some sort of download progress display or similar.

ActiveX controls debuted in v4.0 of the desktop development tool for Microsoft Windows called Visual Basic, but Microsoft later modified the Internet Explorer web browser to use them to incorporate applet-like functionality into web pages.
ActiveX controls are not inherently unsafe, especially when used within a development package like Visual Basic. In that context, assuming the author is trusted, they are no less safe than the other programming code the developer who uses the controls may write.

ActiveX controls are instead unsafe for users of Internet Explorer who turn on the browser's ability to download and activate ActiveX controls within a web page. The problems occur when a user surfs to a non-trusted web page and that web page contains a malicious ActiveX control. This is a very common means of distributing malware such as adware and spyware to unwitting users of Internet Explorer; as such Internet Explorer users should configure their browsers to not install ActiveX controls from untrusted sites. Alternatively, a user can choose to use an alternative web browser that does not use the Trident rendering engine.

Examples of ActiveX controls are: Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player, Apple QuickTime Player, Microsoft Windows Media Player, Real Networks RealPlayer, and Sun Java Virtual Machine.

hmmmmmmm. yep... *nodding*.... like i said, it popped up for me at the top of my screen.... and once i downloaded what it wanted me to, i didn't get the message anymore... it's because my previous songs were saved on an account don has... the one that is up now is uploaded to an account i just started.... so the music that went with my last board should have NOT done it, while the music that's there now will... sometimes i just like to change the music with my mood or on a whim, and i feel bad about asking don to change it 50 times, which means finding the song, downloading it, then uploading it to his site, then putting it on my board for me... when BMR put music on her board, i asked her for the site so that i could stop nagging him and do it myself. lol... i got the active x control message as soon as i pulled up her board.... but once i downloaded the needed active x control (it's sort of like an applet) i had no more pop up and no more trouble with the music whatsoever... your comp is just missing what it needs to be able to play the music.... once the active x control is downloaded, there is no more conflict.

i'm thinkin that people are thinking this is a bigger deal than what it is.. *L* once you download the thing, it never bothers you again... as long as it's actually from microsoft, it's ok to downoad it... it's like needing to download a codec or something to your windows media player in order to be able to listen to a music file....

i don't think there's spyware involved with downloading the active x control... i don't THINK... because i downloaded it, and i am not seeing any of the stuff you're talkin about...

i think you are both talking about something different.... BMR is talking about the boxes that pop up when you mouse over something that is underlined... i think... these are the ads that are on the board unless you pay to have a board without ads... but as far as i know, they only come up when you are using IE as your browser... i have used firefox as my browser for a long time now, and those ad things don't pop up... (they don't pop up on me IE either, now that i have reformatted, so i dunno, that's kinda weird)...

as for the active x control prompt that you get everytime you back out and go to my main page... that is gonna keep poppin up until you download the control needed to hear the music....
